Claude for CFOs.
Faster numbers, same accountability.
Short answer: For a CFO, Claude is most useful on work that connects numbers to a decision: a cash dashboard and 13-week forecast the team can rerun, first-draft variance commentary, checking that every figure in a board deck ties to its source, and reviewing inherited Excel models. Anthropic's own finance team uses Claude for this kind of work. The CFO's part is the rollout: the right plan, clear data rules and a review step for every number.
This guide is for CFOs and finance directors of small and mid-sized companies deciding what to hand to Claude and how to roll it out to their team. Product facts were checked against Anthropic's documentation on October 29, 2026. If you work for several companies at once, see Claude for fractional CFOs.
What a CFO can hand to Claude
| Work | Claude tool | The check |
|---|---|---|
| Cash visibility | A dashboard app built with Claude Code on bank exports, or Claude Dashboards (beta) on warehouse data | Totals match the bank statement |
| 13-week cash forecast | Claude Code, or our free Claude Skill | Each closing balance equals the next week's opening balance |
| Monthly review commentary | Cowork with Anthropic's Finance plugin: /financial-statements and /variance-analysis | Every driver traces to numbers |
| Board deck integrity | Cowork, Claude for PowerPoint and Claude for Excel | Every figure ties to one source |
| Inherited models | Claude for Excel, which explains formulas with cell-level citations | Spot-check the cited cells |
| Month-end close plan | /close-management in the Finance plugin | Owners and dates agreed with the controller |
Start with the dashboard: the financial dashboard guide compares the four ways to build one, and the 13-week template gives you a forecast with known totals.
How Anthropic's own finance team uses Claude
In a May 2026 article, Anthropic described how its corporate finance team works with Claude. The team uses it to check that every number and claim in the quarterly board deck ties to one source of truth, to draft first-pass variance commentary for the monthly review, and to trace references across tabs when a model breaks. Its analysts build interactive forecasting and cohort dashboards from prompts, without SQL or engineering help, and accounting uses it for reconciliations and flux analysis. The tools named are Claude Cowork and Claude for Excel. Anthropic says this frees up 10 to 20 hours a week; that is its own figure, not a benchmark.
Rolling Claude out to the finance team
- Pick the plan. On Team and Enterprise, Anthropic doesn't train on your content by default. Enterprise adds audit logs, the Compliance API and custom data retention. See plans compared.
- Know where data goes in each product. For Claude for Excel, Anthropic says inputs and outputs are deleted on the backend within 30 days, chat history stays in the browser, the add-in doesn't inherit custom retention settings and its activity isn't in Enterprise audit logs. Local Cowork session data stays on each computer and can't be deleted centrally by admins.
- Write the rules. Which data may go in, who reviews what, and what never leaves the finance team.
- Start with one workflow for a month, such as the weekly cash dashboard or variance commentary, and measure the time it really saves.
- Train the team on the checks, not just the prompts. Our eight checks are a good baseline.
Where not to rely on it
Anthropic's own Claude for Excel documentation says it is not recommended for final client deliverables without human review, audit-critical calculations without verification, or models with highly sensitive or regulated data without proper controls. The same applies to anything Claude drafts for a board or a lender: the numbers and the conclusions stay the CFO's.
