Claude for accounting firms.
Plans, Cowork and client data.
Short answer: For most accounting firms, Claude Team is the place to start: $20 per seat a month billed annually ($25 monthly) for 2 to 150 people, with Claude Code and Cowork included, no model training on your content by default, and skills an owner can share across the firm. Enterprise adds audit logs, the Compliance API and custom data retention. Before client data goes in, update your security plan and check US rules such as the FTC Safeguards Rule and section 7216.
This guide is for owners and managers of small and mid-sized accounting, bookkeeping and tax firms deciding how to give their staff Claude. It covers which plan to buy, what to switch on or off, how to connect the firm's accounting systems, and what to check before client data goes in. Prices and features were checked on Anthropic's pages on October 28, 2026.
Which Claude plan fits an accounting firm
| Pro (one person) | Team | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20/month billed monthly, $17/month billed annually | Standard seat $25/month monthly or $20 annually; Premium seat (5× usage) $125 or $100 | $20/seat/month billed annually, plus usage at API rates |
| Seats | 1 | 2 to 150 | 20-seat minimum on the self-serve plan |
| Training on your content | Only if the model-improvement setting is on | Not by default | Not by default |
| Claude Code and Cowork | Included | Included | Included; owners control Cowork |
| Skills shared across the firm | No | Yes, added by an owner | Yes, and by group through plugins |
| Single sign-on | No | Yes | Yes, plus SCIM |
| Audit logs and Compliance API | No | No | Yes |
| Custom data retention | No | No | Yes |
A firm of a few people up to a few dozen usually starts on Team. Enterprise makes sense when you need audit logs or the Compliance API for oversight, custom retention periods, or SCIM. Keep client work off personal Pro accounts: they run on consumer terms, and the firm can't manage them.
What staff can use Claude for, by role
| Role | Tasks | Where | Check before it leaves the firm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partner or manager | Review memos, client email drafts, summaries of new guidance | Claude chat | Open every source it cites |
| Staff accountant | Accruals, reconciliations and flux analysis at month-end | Cowork, with Anthropic's Finance plugin | Totals tie to the trial balance |
| Bookkeeper | Categorize bank exports, find duplicates, receipt logs, missing-receipt emails | Cowork | Row count and net total match the export |
| Tax preparer | Organize source documents and list what's missing | Cowork, on a firm account, after the client data checks below | Every number against the source document; Claude doesn't file anything |
| Advisory or FP&A | Cash flow dashboards, 13-week forecasts, budget vs actual tools you rerun every month | Claude Code | Known totals agreed before the build |

Connect the firm's accounting systems
- QuickBooks. Intuit offers a QuickBooks connector for Claude (US customers, per Intuit), and Anthropic's Claude for Small Business plugin builds month-end and tax-prep workflows on it. See Claude and QuickBooks; on QuickBooks Desktop, use exports.
- Xero. Xero's own connector is read-only. See how to connect Xero to Claude.
- FreshBooks. FreshBooks' connector, listed in Claude's directory since September 2026, is read-only too. See Claude and FreshBooks.
- Finance plugin. Anthropic's Finance plugin adds commands such as /journal-entry, /reconciliation, /financial-statements, /variance-analysis and /close-management to Cowork (see our Finance plugin guide). Anthropic says its outputs should be reviewed by qualified financial professionals before use in reporting or filings.
On Team and Enterprise, an owner decides which connectors and plugins the firm can use. The setting that lets people "Always allow" connector tools without asking is off by default; keep it off for systems that hold client books.
Roll it out in six steps
- Buy the plan and use firm accounts. Everyone signs in to the firm's organization, with single sign-on on Team and Enterprise.
- Decide what's on. Cowork is on by default on Team and Enterprise; owners can turn it off under Organization settings → Cowork. Leave "Always allow" for connector tools off.
- Share instructions and skills. Owners add firm-wide skills under Organization settings → Plugins & skills, and they're on for everyone by default. Our free 13-week forecast skill is an example of the format.
- Pilot on fictional data. Two or three people, two weeks, sample files with known totals. Note every answer that needed fixing.
- Update your paperwork. Add Claude to your Written Information Security Plan as a service provider, check what engagement letters say about outside tools, and decide with your adviser when you need client consent.
- Set one review rule. Nothing Claude produces goes to a client or into the books until a person has checked the numbers against the source.
Client data: what to check first
If your firm prepares US tax returns, it counts as a financial institution under the FTC Safeguards Rule and must oversee its service providers; an AI tool that reads client files can be one. Section 7216 limits how tax return information is disclosed, and the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility wrote in June 2026 that practitioners "must strictly handle all client data using only secure, enterprise-approved AI." AICPA members also have the Confidential Client Information Rule. Details and sources are in US rules for accountants and tax preparers.
Two facts about Cowork matter for firms. Anthropic says local Cowork session data stays on the member's computer, isn't subject to its standard retention policies, and can't be managed or deleted centrally by admins. Cowork sessions are also not covered by zero data retention. Anthropic also notes that the risk of prompt injection is not zero, so only point Cowork at folders and sites the task needs. Our printable client data checklist turns this into 15 checks.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Team enough for an accounting firm?
For most small and mid-sized firms, yes. Team includes Claude Code and Cowork, single sign-on, admin controls for connectors and firm-wide skills, and Anthropic does not train on your content by default. Choose Enterprise if you need audit logs, the Compliance API, custom data retention or SCIM.
Does Anthropic train on an accounting firm’s data?
Not by default on Team and Enterprise. On personal Free, Pro and Max accounts, conversations are used for training when the model-improvement setting is on, which is one reason to keep client work on firm accounts.
How much does Claude cost for a 10-person firm?
On Team, 10 standard seats cost $200 a month billed annually ($2,400 a year) or $250 billed monthly, as of October 28, 2026. Premium seats, with five times the usage, cost $100 a seat billed annually.
Can an accounting firm use Claude Cowork with client files?
Yes, on a firm account and after the client data checks: your security plan, client agreements and, for tax preparers, section 7216. Local Cowork session data stays on each person’s computer, and Anthropic says admins can’t manage or delete it centrally.
