Claude Cowork for accountants.
Month-end workflows.
Short answer: Accountants can use Claude Cowork to prepare month-end work from a client folder: flux analysis, variance commentary drafts, AR follow-up lists, close checklist status and management pack drafts. Give it one client folder holding copies of only what the task needs, a written instructions file with materiality and control totals, and keep approvals on Manual. Sign-off stays with a person.
Cowork is most useful when the inputs are clear and the output has a known shape. Month-end close has both. The setup below makes every run predictable and every result checkable.
A month-end folder layout for Claude Cowork
Client-A/2026-09/ 00-instructions.md your rules, materiality, account names 01-exports/ trial balance, bank, AR and AP aging (CSV or XLSX) 02-prior-month/ last month's pack, for comparison 03-output/ where Cowork saves its work
Connect only the client-month folder. Cowork can read and write any folder you connect, and Anthropic's safety guide advises against giving it access to sensitive files such as financial documents, so keep only the copies each task needs in it.
The instructions file
Write the rules once, in plain English, and keep them in the folder. Cowork reads folder instructions as context for the task.
# Instructions for Client A, September 2026 close - Materiality for commentary: changes over $2,500 or 10% month over month. - Use the account names exactly as in the trial balance. - Never change source files. Save everything to 03-output. - If a number cannot be traced to a source file, write "UNVERIFIED". - Expected control totals: trial balance debits = credits = $1,284,610. - Draft only. A person reviews and signs off every output.
If you reuse the same instructions for every client, turn them into a skill so Claude follows them automatically. See Claude skills for accountants.
Five month-end workflows in Claude Cowork
| Task | What you give Cowork | What you get | Your check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flux analysis | This month and prior month trial balance | Table of accounts over materiality with change and % change | Totals tie to both trial balances |
| Variance commentary draft | Flux table plus notes from the client | Two-sentence draft per account, marked as draft | Every explanation is supported by a document or the client |
| AR follow-up list | AR aging export | Customers over 60 days, largest first, with draft reminder emails | Aging total matches the AR control account |
| Close checklist status | Last month's checklist and this month's output folder | Updated checklist with missing items listed | You mark items complete, not Cowork |
| Management pack draft | Approved figures and last month's pack | Word or PowerPoint draft in the same structure | Figures match the approved numbers exactly |
Scheduled tasks
Per Anthropic, scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so they keep running when your computer is off (on Team and Enterprise, cloud sessions are in beta). A scheduled task can use folders on your computer only while the Claude desktop app is open. Anthropic advises starting with low-risk tasks, keeping sensitive files and hard-to-undo actions out of them, and reviewing every run. Good candidates are read-only: a Monday summary of overdue receivables, or a reminder list of open close items. Keep anything that writes to the books manual.
Professional safeguards
- Confidentiality. Cowork tasks run on Anthropic's servers, and files Claude opens are processed there. Confirm your engagement letters, firm policy and plan terms allow it. On Team and Enterprise, data is handled under commercial terms and isn't used for training.
- Evidence. Treat Cowork outputs as drafts and keep your own working papers showing how each figure was tied out.
- Standards and tax. Use answers on GAAP, IFRS or tax as a starting point to verify, not as authority.
- Checking. Our eight checks for AI-generated calculations apply to every workflow here.
