Claude Cowork vs Claude Code
for finance teams.
Short answer: Use Claude Cowork when you want Claude to do a finance task for you, such as sorting files, building a spreadsheet or drafting a report. Use Claude Code when you want a tool you can rerun every month, like a cash flow dashboard. Both come from Anthropic and need a paid plan (Pro is $20/month). Cowork tasks now run in Anthropic's cloud; Claude Code can run on your own computer.
Cowork and Claude Code share the same agent technology, so the difference is not intelligence. It is what you walk away with: a finished file, or a working tool.
Disclosure: The Experts AI teaches a workshop on building a cash flow dashboard with Claude Code.
Claude Cowork vs Claude Code side by side
| Claude Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Finished work: spreadsheets, documents, presentations, organized folders | Software: an app or script you keep and run again |
| Where you use it | Claude desktop app, web and mobile (web and mobile in beta on Team); on Pro and Max, being merged into any Claude conversation | Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, the desktop app (Code tab) and the web |
| Where the work runs | Anthropic's cloud (Pro and Max since October 6, 2026); folders on your computer only through the desktop app | Your computer in the terminal, IDE or desktop app; Anthropic's cloud for Claude Code on the web |
| How it works | Plans a multi-step task and works with files in folders you connect, connectors and plugins | Reads a project folder, writes code, runs commands and tests |
| Repeating the job | Run the task again, or schedule it; the AI reads the data each time | The finished tool runs the same way every time, without the AI reading the data |
| Typical finance jobs | Receipt logs, categorization, reconciliation lists, management pack drafts, research | Cash flow dashboards, bank-export cleaners, reconciliation scripts, 13-week forecasts |
| Skill needed | Describe the outcome and check it | Describe the outcome, approve steps and check it; no coding required, but files and folders help |
| Plans | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, Console |
Same job, two ways: a monthly cash summary
Suppose you need money in, money out and net cash by month from a bank export.
Read bank-2026-09.csv in this folder. Create cash-summary.xlsx with money in, money out and net cash flow for September 2026, and a chart. Positive amounts are money in.
You get the spreadsheet in minutes. Next month, Cowork reads the new export and builds it again, and the result can differ slightly in layout.
Build a small web app that imports a bank CSV (date, description, category, amount) and shows money in, money out and net cash flow by month, with a period filter. Importing the same file twice must not double count. Expected totals for the sample: in $48,250, out $32,840, net $15,410.
It takes longer the first time. After that you import each month's file into the same tool and get the same layout, and the AI does not need to see the new data. That is the approach in our step-by-step dashboard guide.
A simple rule for choosing
- Once or twice, or the files change shape each time: Cowork.
- Every week or month with the same file layout: build it once with Claude Code.
- Inside an existing Excel model: neither; use Claude for Excel. See Claude Code and Excel.
- Sensitive client data you would rather not send repeatedly: a Claude Code tool built on fictional data, then run on real files without the AI. See what Claude Code sends.
Can you use both?
Yes, and many finance people will. A common pattern: Cowork handles the irregular work (a messy client folder, a one-off analysis), and the recurring reports run on small tools built with Claude Code. Both are included in the same paid Claude plan.
