Claude for accountants.
What it is good for.
Short answer: Accountants get the most from Claude on four jobs: reconciliation helpers, variance explanations, formula debugging and first drafts of client emails. Use Claude chat or Claude for Excel for one-off work, Claude Cowork for multi-step file work, and Claude Code for tools you rerun. Pro costs $20/month. Check firm policy before sending client data, and reconcile every figure.
Claude can save accountants real time on reading, explaining, reconciling and building small tools, as long as every number it touches is checked. This guide covers which Claude product fits which task, concrete use cases, the limits, and how to learn it.
Which Claude product for which job
| Tool | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Claude (chat) | The Claude app on web, desktop and mobile. | Drafting memos, explaining standards, reviewing documents, quick analysis of uploaded files. |
| Claude for Excel | Claude in a sidebar inside Microsoft Excel that can read, analyze, modify and create workbooks. | Working inside existing models: explaining formulas, debugging, populating templates. |
| Claude Code | Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It reads files, writes code and runs commands on your computer. Available in a terminal and in the desktop app. | Building your own small tools: dashboards, import cleaners, reconciliation helpers. |
Use cases that work well
- Reconciliation helpers. Ask Claude Code to build a small tool that compares a bank export with a ledger export and lists unmatched items. You define the matching rules; it writes the code.
- Month-end close tracker. A simple app or sheet that shows which close tasks are done, who owns them and what is overdue.
- Variance explanations. Give Claude two periods of a trial balance export and ask which lines moved most and what to investigate. You still write the conclusion.
- Formula debugging. Claude for Excel can explain what a formula does and why it returns an error, without rebuilding the workbook.
- Client-ready dashboards. A cash flow dashboard built from a client's transaction export. See our step-by-step guide.
- First drafts. Engagement letter sections, process documentation and client emails, reviewed before sending.
Where accountants must be careful
- Accuracy. Claude can produce confident, wrong numbers. Reconcile everything to independently calculated totals. Our checking checklist helps.
- Client confidentiality. Prompts and files Claude reads are sent to Anthropic. On consumer plans, data may be used for training if the setting is on. Check firm policy and professional obligations. Details in our data guide.
- Standards and tax positions. Treat Claude's answers on GAAP, IFRS or tax as a starting point to verify against the source, not as authority.
How to learn it
Start with one small project on fictional data where the right answer is known. A cash flow dashboard from a four-column CSV is a good first build: our free template includes the data, expected totals and a prompt. For structured courses, see our comparison of Claude courses for finance.
