13 Claude prompts
for finance work.
Short answer: The best Claude prompts for accountants do three things: state the data structure, give a number the answer must match, and allow Claude to say it is unsure. Below are 13 copy-ready prompts for month-end, reporting, client emails and building tools, each with a way to check the result. Most also work in ChatGPT and Copilot.
Good finance prompts share three habits: they state the data structure, they give the AI a number it must match, and they allow it to say "I'm not sure". Every prompt below follows those rules. They work in Claude, and most work in ChatGPT or Copilot too.
Try each prompt on fictional or anonymized data first, such as the sample coffee-shop CSV. Follow your firm's AI policy for client data.
Month-end and bookkeeping
1. Categorize a bank export
Here is a bank export (CSV). Suggest a category for each row using this chart of accounts: [list]. Do not guess: mark anything unclear as "Review" and explain why. Return a table with date, description, amount, category, confidence.
2. Find likely duplicates
List transactions in this file that share the same date, amount and a similar description. Show them in pairs and do not delete anything.
3. Missing-receipt list
From this transaction list, show every payment over $75 with no receipt reference in the "receipt" column, sorted by amount.
4. Reconciliation gaps
Compare the bank statement CSV with the ledger CSV. List items in one but not the other, and items where amounts differ. State the total difference and check it equals the difference in balances.
Analysis and reporting
5. Monthly cash summary
Summarize cash in, cash out and net cash by month. Before answering, tell me the total of each column so I can compare with my own totals.
6. Budget vs actual commentary
Here is budget vs actual by line. Write three sentences of commentary for each line with a variance over 10% or $5,000. Use only the numbers given; do not invent causes. Where the cause is unknown, write "cause to confirm".
7. 13-week cash forecast check
Check this 13-week forecast: does each week's closing cash equal the next week's opening cash? List every week where it does not.
8. Explain a formula
Explain what this Excel formula does in plain English, step by step, and give one input where it would return an unexpected result: [formula].
Client and team communication
9. Client email from notes
Turn these notes into a short, friendly email to a small-business client. Keep every number exactly as written. Flag anything that reads like tax or legal advice.
10. Explain cash flow vs profit
Explain to a business owner in five sentences why their profit was $12,000 but cash went down $3,000 this month, using these items: [list].
Building tools with Claude Code
11. Dashboard brief
Build a cash flow dashboard from this CSV (date, description, category, amount; positive = received). Expected receipts are $48,250, payments $32,840, net $15,410. Explain your plan before changing anything. Flag ambiguous data instead of guessing.
12. Import that does not double count
Add CSV import. Importing the same file twice must not change the totals. Show me how you detect repeated rows before you write the code.
13. Self-check
Write a short check that recalculates the three summary totals from the raw file and fails loudly if the dashboard shows different numbers.
How to adapt any prompt
- Add a control total. "The column should sum to $X" turns a guess into something checkable.
- Ask for the method first. "Explain your approach before changing anything."
- Forbid silent fixes. "Flag ambiguous rows instead of guessing."
- Check one line by hand. See how to check AI-generated financial calculations.
