Claude for Excel vs Copilot in Excel for finance
Short answer: Both read and edit a workbook from plain-English requests. Claude for Excel is Anthropic’s add-in for Claude Pro ($20/month) and higher plans, with cell-level citations and finance data connectors. Copilot in Excel comes with eligible Microsoft 365 plans and can itself use Claude or GPT models. Test both on a copy of a model you know.
In 2026 “Claude in Excel” can mean two things: Anthropic’s own add-in, or Claude chosen as the model inside Microsoft Copilot. This page compares the two products on what matters for finance work: who can use them, what they cost, what they change in a workbook and where your data goes.
Side by side
| Claude for Excel | Copilot in Excel | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Anthropic’s add-in, listed as Claude for Microsoft 365, that runs in a sidebar in Excel | Microsoft’s assistant built into Excel |
| Who can use it | Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans | Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with an AI credits plan, Microsoft 365 Premium, a commercial Copilot subscription, or a business or enterprise plan eligible for Copilot Chat (standard access) |
| US price | Claude Pro: $20/month billed monthly or $17/month billed annually. Team Standard: $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually | Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on: $21 per user/month billed annually ($18 first-year promotion until December 31, 2026), $25.20 billed monthly |
| Where it runs | Excel on the web; Windows with Microsoft 365 (build 16.0.13127.20296 or later); Mac 16.46 or later. Not Excel 2016/2019 perpetual, iPad or Android | Edit mode on Windows, Mac and the web; more limited on iPad and iPhone |
| Models | A curated set of Claude models | Claude or GPT models, or Auto. Switching needs a commercial Copilot or Microsoft 365 Premium subscription; on work accounts an admin must allow Anthropic as a sub-processor |
| What it does in a workbook | Answers with cell-level citations; changes assumptions while keeping formula links; finds the cause of errors; builds or fills models; sorts, filters, edits pivot tables, applies conditional formatting and data validation | Edit, plan and chat modes; writes formulas, charts and PivotTables; formats; can fetch web information and search your work files |
| Outside data | Connectors such as S&P Global, LSEG and Daloopa; your enabled Skills | Your Microsoft 365 work files |
| Known limits | No data tables, macros or VBA. Anthropic does not recommend it for final client deliverables or audit-critical calculations without review | Calculation must be set to Automatic; files checked out in SharePoint can fail; Strict Open XML files are not supported |
| Data handling | Inputs and outputs deleted on the backend within 30 days, with exceptions; chat history stored locally in your browser; does not inherit custom retention settings; not in Enterprise audit logs; included in the Compliance API (beta) | Edits saved to the workbook are visible to anyone with access; Copilot activity history can be deleted as a whole, not per conversation; admins control access through Copilot Chat settings |
Which to choose for finance work
- Your firm runs on Microsoft 365 and IT manages Copilot. Start with Copilot. If your admin allows Anthropic, you can pick a Claude model inside it.
- You need market or company data in the model (S&P Global, LSEG, Daloopa), or the same Claude account across Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Cowork: Claude for Excel.
- You are an individual accountant, bookkeeper or fractional CFO on Claude Pro. Claude for Excel comes with the plan; no Microsoft add-on to buy.
- Client data with strict retention or audit-log rules. Check both against your policy. Claude for Excel does not inherit custom retention settings and is not in Enterprise audit logs.
- The job is not really a spreadsheet, such as the same cash dashboard every month from new exports. Neither: build a small app with Claude Code, or try our free CSV dashboard tool.
A 20-minute test on your own model
- Make a copy of a model you know well. Never test on a live client file.
- Ask both to explain how one key number is calculated, and click through the cells they cite.
- Change one assumption and check that every dependent cell updates.
- Break a formula on purpose (a #REF! error) and ask both to find the cause.
- Ask each for a chart or pivot table of the same data.
- Compare the formulas they wrote, not just the answers.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude inside Copilot in Excel?
Yes. Copilot in Excel supports Anthropic and OpenAI models through a model picker. Switching models needs a commercial Copilot or Microsoft 365 Premium subscription, and on work accounts an admin must allow Anthropic as a sub-processor.
Is Claude for Excel included in Claude Pro?
Yes. Anthropic lists Claude for Excel as generally available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It uses your Claude account and its usage limits.
Which is better for financial models?
Neither wins everywhere. Claude for Excel cites cells and keeps formula links when you change assumptions; Copilot works inside Microsoft’s tenant and licensing. Test both on a copy of a model you know and compare the formulas they write.
Do they work on Excel 2019 or an iPad?
Claude for Excel does not run on Excel 2016 or 2019 perpetual licenses, on iPad or on Android. Microsoft says Copilot’s edit mode works on Windows, Mac and the web, with more limited support on iPad and iPhone.
