Claude vs ChatGPT vs Copilot
for finance work (2026).
Short answer: For bookkeeping and finance, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20/month and both have Excel add-ins; Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is $18/user/month on top of Microsoft 365. Choose Copilot if your firm lives in Microsoft 365, Claude or ChatGPT for spreadsheet work, and Claude Code if you want to build repeatable tools from exports.
All three can now work inside Excel, and all three cost roughly the same for one person. The real difference for finance people is what else you want to do: stay inside the spreadsheet, research with market data, or build your own small tools from exports. This page compares them on facts published by each vendor.

Which one for which job
- Your firm lives in Microsoft 365. Copilot is the easiest to approve: it is licensed through your existing Microsoft tenant and works with Outlook, Teams and SharePoint files. Ask IT whether it is already in your plan.
- You build models inside Excel. ChatGPT for Excel and Claude for Excel both edit workbooks from plain-English instructions. Test both on a copy of a model you know well and compare the formulas they write, not only the answers.
- You want a repeatable tool, not a one-off answer. This is where a coding agent helps: Claude Code (or Codex) can turn a monthly bank or QuickBooks export into a dashboard or a checking script that runs the same way every month. Our cash flow dashboard guide shows the process.
- You mainly write. Memos, client emails, variance commentary: any of the three is fine. Pick the one your firm already approves.
Claude vs ChatGPT for bookkeeping
- Price: the same for one person. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20/month.
- QuickBooks: Intuit offers a QuickBooks connector in Claude and a QuickBooks plugin in ChatGPT. Both can work with live QuickBooks data; see connecting QuickBooks to Claude.
- Working through files: Claude Cowork works on folders of receipts and exports on your computer and saves finished spreadsheets. See Cowork for bookkeeping.
- Building your own tools: Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex both build small apps from plain-English instructions, such as a bank-export cleaner or a cash flow dashboard.
- Accuracy: neither is reliable without checks. Give the AI a total the answer must match, and verify against the bank statement.
Data rules matter more than features
Whatever you choose, what you paste or upload leaves your computer. Consumer plans and business plans have different training and retention terms. Before using client or employer data, check your firm's AI policy and the plan's data terms. For Claude Code specifically, see is Claude Code safe for financial data.
A fair 30-minute test
- Take a fictional or anonymized file with totals you already know, such as our sample CSV (receipts $48,250, payments $32,840, net $15,410).
- Give each tool the same instruction: summarize cash in, cash out and net by month.
- Check the three totals and one month by hand.
- Ask each tool to explain its method. The one that shows its work clearly is the one you can audit.
