Claude for Small Business:
for owners and bookkeepers.
Short answer: Claude for Small Business is Anthropic's plugin of 43 ready-made workflows in Claude Cowork, available on paid plans. For bookkeeping, /close-month reconciles books against your payment processor and writes a close packet, /plan-payroll checks cash before payroll, and /tax-prep builds quarterly estimates or a 1099 list. It works with QuickBooks, Xero and Gusto, and nothing is sent, posted or paid without your approval.

Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business on May 13, 2026 and expanded it on September 15, 2026. This guide covers what matters to bookkeepers and accountants who work with small businesses: plans and install, the workflows that touch the books, and what to check before you rely on them.
What it is
- A plugin made by Anthropic with 43 ready-to-run workflows, according to its plugin page. It runs in Claude Cowork in the Claude desktop app.
- Connections. The plugin page lists 37 partner connectors, including Intuit QuickBooks, Xero, Gusto, PayPal, Stripe, Square, Shopify and HubSpot. Xero and Gusto were among the integrations added on September 15, 2026.
- No connector needed to start. "Upload a spreadsheet or statement and most workflows still run," the plugin page says.
- Approval first. Every workflow starts in approval mode, so nothing sends, posts or pays until you say so. Once you trust a workflow, you can let it run on a schedule.
Plans and install
Anthropic says the plugin is available on every paid Claude plan and recommends Team for businesses with more than one person. Its install guide asks for the Claude desktop app on a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, so the free plan doesn't include it.
- Open Cowork in the Claude desktop app and click Customize in the left sidebar.
- Under Plugins, click +, find Small Business and click Install.
- Run
/smb-onboard. It asks about the business, helps connect tools and saves that context for the other workflows. - Connect QuickBooks (US customers only, per Intuit) or Xero, or start from uploaded spreadsheets and statements.
On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, starting with Pro and Max, so menus can look slightly different while that rolls out.
Workflows that touch the books
| Workflow | What it does, per Anthropic | Tools it uses |
|---|---|---|
/close-month | "Reconciles your books against your payment processor and writes the close packet for your accountant." | QuickBooks, PayPal |
/plan-payroll | "Builds a 30-day cash forecast, ranks overdue invoices, and drafts a reminder for each one." The plugin page adds that it "gets the run ready for you to submit"; with Gusto, Claude stages payroll for you to submit. | QuickBooks, PayPal; Gusto for payroll |
/month-heads-up | "Reads the next 30 days of cash, finds your tightest week, and flags what to watch before month-end." | QuickBooks |
/tax-prep | "Calculates quarterly estimated taxes or builds a year-end 1099 list, formatted for your accountant." | QuickBooks |
cash-flow-snapshot | "Reads cash, invoices, bills, and incoming settlements and builds a 30/60/90-day forecast with the tight weeks flagged." | QuickBooks, PayPal |
invoice-chase | "Ranks overdue invoices and drafts a reminder for each one, matched to how that customer has paid before." | QuickBooks, PayPal |
For business owners: beyond the books
The same plugin covers more than bookkeeping. Anthropic’s plugin page groups its workflows into running the business, growing it, and setting it up. Examples it names:
| Workflow | What it does | Area |
|---|---|---|
/monday-brief | Cash, sales, pipeline, calendar and priorities on one page | Run the business |
/pay-the-bills | Bills to pay | Run the business |
/restock | Reorders | Run the business |
/speed-to-lead | Answers new inquiries outside business hours and logs them to your CRM | Grow the business |
/grow-pipeline | Finds prospects like your best customers and drafts outreach | Grow the business |
/call-list | Who to call today | Grow the business |
/marketing-monday | What’s working, customer feedback and competitor changes | Grow the business |
The plugin page lists 37 partner connectors, including QuickBooks, Xero, Gusto, Stripe, Square, Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and Zapier. Anthropic’s small business page recommends Pro for one person and Team for a business with more than one; on October 28, 2026 Team cost $25 a seat a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually. Messages, payments and posts still wait for your approval.
If you are the owner, the bookkeeping workflows below are the ones to agree on with your bookkeeper or accountant, so that they review the close packet and tax figures before anything is filed.
What to check before you rely on it
- Tie the close packet to the books. Totals should match the Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and bank statements in QuickBooks or Xero for the same dates. Our eight checks for AI financial calculations apply here too.
- Keep approval mode on for client books until a workflow has run cleanly for a few months; schedule it only after that.
- Payroll and taxes stay with you. You submit the payroll run, and Anthropic says "Claude doesn't file anything for you." Treat /tax-prep output as a draft for the accountant.
- Know what each connection can do. Intuit's QuickBooks connector is for US customers only, and Xero says its own connector for Claude is read-only.
- One business per setup. Onboarding saves one business's context for the other workflows, so don't mix clients in one setup. The simplest route is for each client to run it in their own Claude account, with you reviewing the output.
Client data and privacy
- Anthropic's Small Business page says "By default, we don't train on your business data on Team and Enterprise plans." On Pro and Max, whether Cowork data can be used for training follows your "Help improve our AI models" setting (see is Claude Cowork safe for client data?), so check it before client work.
- Cowork sessions are not covered by zero data retention, even on Enterprise.
- If you prepare US tax returns, the FTC Safeguards Rule and section 7216 apply to client data in any AI tool. See US rules for accountants and the printable client data checklist.
